What I Bring to HIKE and BACKPACK with My Dog! | Miranda in the Wild

So many people have asked for a video about my dog’s backpacking and hiking gear! I’m excited to finally show off what my dog uses hiking and backpacking as well as how she carries everything. Nala is my adventure dog and favorite backpacking buddy, and dialing in her gear has been just as important as working on my own kit. What will be right for you and your adventure dog will vary, and you probably don’t need all the gear I use, but hopefully this video can help you decide what backpacking and hiking gear will help you and your dog on your outdoor adventures!

*This video is NOT sponsored by Ruffwear. They just make a lot of great outdoor gear for dogs!

  1. I prefere no dog pack since we do long distances i carry all food and water my dogs “job” is to pull me up the hills the ruffwear elastic leash makes it smooth
I made a rain coat out of tyvek that ties up with 2 strings and covers the chest to keep mud off it weighs nothing and works fantastically
My dog and I share a sleeping pad and my quilt is wide so he fits under it with me
We use CCF pads most of the time
If its cold I built a tyvek “sock” for a long wide xtherm so his clickers dont pop the mattress
I bring ruffware shoes with vibram soles and some snow booties and a small thing of mushers wax
I use a collapsible bowl for water and carry a nite-ize fabric bowl for food it packs tight and fits in opsaks
As far as extra 1st aid its basically vet wrap and non stick gauze
My dog is a 60ish pound heeler coyote mix for the record so he does well in cold weather

  2. So I’d LOVE to go solo backpacking with my dog, however I’m a little nervous about the idea of being somewhere alone with my dog and you know… getting lost or something of that nature. I guess my question is how do you make sure your dog as well as yourself are always safe wherever you go? I don’t necessarily mean navigation, I can read a compass or a map at least
